What is a Federation?

"Federation with the junior school has had a very positive impact on staff development and pupils' achievement."
Fryern Infant Ofsted May 12

"Parents particularly like the fact that their children really like school and that the federation has provided exciting opportunities and improved transition."
Fryern Junior Ofsted June 11.

Fryern Infant and Junior Schools formed the "Fryern Federation" in November 2009. This means that there is one head teacher and one governing body across the two schools. The Federation of Fryern Infant and Junior Schools is a friendly, caring, family community, committed to achievement and sharing in the successes of each individual. As a federation one of our key objectives is to create a through primary ethos and therefore we work to ensure consistency in practice through shared policies and procedures.

We share the site and resources to the benefit of all the children and staff on the site. There is a shared telephone and ICT network. The children can occasionally be found working in each other's building. Each class of infant children uses the junior ICT suite once a week and the junior children can use the nurture room and children's kitchen in the infant building. We plan for joint events when the children, staff and occasionally parents can come together for example though our dance afternoon and our Christmas celebrations. The children come together for special events and activities e.g. assemblies, RRR days, theatre performances, and themed days. Sometimes the children in the infant and the junior schools join together for special writing events- e.g. 'When the Aliens Came to Fryern' and 'Hansel and Gretel' story writing. Our able writers in years 2, 3, and 4 have also worked together on special writing events. We have a joint school council too.

Staff also have the opportunity to work closely together as a joint federation staff. We have joint training, staff meetings and paired teams across the schools to manage subjects. Some staff work in both schools on a daily basis, and increasingly other staff can be found working in each other's school or taking clubs in each other's school. We believe that this enables staff to share their expertise and develop professionally. It can be cost effective too!

We have a federation newsletter each week to help parents know what is happening in each school. Our joint PTA run school discos for the children, clothes collections, Christmas and Summer Fairs as well as social events for parents.

This joined up working ensures consistency of approach and better progression and transition for all of our children.

Our school structure is currently two form entry up to and including year 4 and three mixed year classes for years 5 and 6.

The school day differs slightly between the two schools:

School Finishes 3.20pm  School Finishes 3.15pm
 Lunch 12.00-1.05pm  Lunch 12-1pm
