Governors provide strategic leadership and accountability and have an important part to play in raising school standards. To ensure the Governing Body has the relevant expertise to carry out its core duties effectively, governors have been appointed with different skill sets. In addition, it is important for governors to be familiar with the school and its community. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body, so individual governors do not act independently. Governors are appointed for a period of four years and may seek re-election if eligible. There are different categories of governor, but once appointed, governors are of equal standing.
Meet the Governors below:
Miriam Bokhove Governor since 2015, co-opted governor Committees: Curriculum and Standards, Finance and Resources, Pay Main roles and expertise: Chair of Governors, PP, SEND. I have an interest in analysing data and I have gained a lot of knowledge of governance. I’m a good listener and a teambuilder. Motivation: I became a governor because I wanted to learn more about the education system my children were in. I still am a governor because I feel I can contribute to creating a safe and vibrant community where children -and adults- can grow as human beings, with opportunities for all to experience and learn new things and gain life skills. As a long-time member of the pastoral team of my community, I acknowledge the importance of building a community where everyone can feel they belong and are valued. I strongly believe in inclusion, equity and providing equal opportunities for all. I want to help give all members of the Fryern community a voice, including the softly spoken and less confident.

Karen Murray Governor since 2019, co-opted Committees: Finance and Headteacher performance management Main roles and expertise: Vice-Chair, Chair of Finance Committee with expertise in leadership and strategic management Motivation: Schools are a very important part of the community and when I retired, I wanted to continue to make a contribution locally and to utilise my experience and skills.

Paula Moorse Governor since over 25 years, co-opted Committees: Curriculum and Standards Main roles and expertise I am the Chair of Curriculum and Standards Committee. I became a governor at Fryern Infant School over 25 years ago continuing in the role when the two schools federated in 2009. Prior to my retirement I spent 30 years working in education as a primary school teacher, in Hampshire’s Inspection and Advisory Service, at the University of Winchester and as an overseas consultant. I am the named governor for the Wider Curriculum. Until recently I was the safeguarding, SEND and Pupil Premium Governor. Motivation In becoming a school governor, I wanted to share my professional knowledge and educational experiences with the schools at Fryern as my own two children attended the school. I am passionate about the opportunities we offer children. I want to be part of a team that not only supports children in their learning, helping them achieve their personal best but also to support the staff in the continual changes that we face in this complex world of education.

Jane Spencer Governor since 2016, co-opted Committees: Finances and Resources, Headteacher Performance Management. Main roles and expertise: Safeguarding Governor Motivation: I became a parent governor in 2016 in order to contribute back to the school that my children were attending. I have an interest in finance, strategic management and health & safety but enjoy being involved in the wider governance of the school and believe in the importance of a high quality primary education that is accessible for all children.

Jamie Hunt Governor since 2023, parent governor. Committees: TBC Main roles and expertise: TBC Motivation: As a parent, my aim is to support the school to be the best it can be for the children. I head up the education team as a national regulator, and so have the skills, knowledge and experience to positively contribute to the governing body, and to help (and constructively challenge) leaders in achieving the federation's vision and aims.

James Eldred Governor since 2019, co-opted Committees: Finance & Resources, Pay, Head Teacher Performance Management Main roles and expertise: As the Head of IT at a local company as well as a parent of a current pupil, I bring a senior business-based mindset to provide a different viewpoint and challenge to the work done across the school, whilst also having the best interests of the children in the forefront of my mind. Motivation: I was looking for an opportunity to volunteer in my local community, and when my son started school at Fryern becoming a school governor seemed the perfect fit to help ensure all children at the school were getting the best education experience that the school can provide.

James Atkins Governor since 2022, elected by parents Committees: Pay committee Main roles and expertise: Pupil Premium & Safeguarding. Having worked for Hampshire County Council Children’s Services for more than 10 years, across a wide range of programmes, I am able to bring a wealth of knowledge to support the work of the governing body. I am able to deliver this through logical and methodical thinking and desire to seek a solution to every problem. Motivation: My main reason for becoming a governor is to be a ‘critical friend’ to challenge and support the school in providing the best learning environment for children from the moment they enrol to the day they leave. Working as part of the governing body has given me the opportunity to use my own skills to the benefit of the school but also broaden my skill set and learn from the knowledge of others.

John Stainton Governor since 2023, co-opted Committees: Finances and Resources, Curriculum and Standards Committees. Main roles and expertise: I have extensive experience of how the Central Government is resourced, how it develops policy, how it manages performance and crisis resolution. Motivation: I have recently had to take early ill health retirement and as I have been a parent governor in the past, I was pleased to answer Hampshire County Council’s call for volunteers to become a School Governor.

Debbie Silvester Governor since 2022, co-opted Committees: Curriculum and Standards Main roles and expertise: SEND governor. I have professional experience of managing a team, mental health, Safeguarding, Special Educational Needs and I am also a parent. Motivation: I am a Governor as I want to support in any way I can, using my experience professionally and as a parent. Equality and diversity are important values I hold close. Staff and parent engagement is very important to me too.

Adam Murton Governor since 2023, LA nominated Committees: Curriculum and Standards and Pay Main roles and expertise: My areas of interest within the board are mathematics, and training and development. I am also intending to create a Governors’ Development Plan for the board, an action plan that helps set our priorities and organise the work and activities of the board. Motivation: I also believe that the social and psychological development of young people is very important, as I have worked previously with individuals who had disadvantageous starts in life. I have a strong sense of belonging to Chandler’s Ford, and want to give something back to my community. I also have a personal connection to the Fryern Schools as both my children attended the Fryern Federation.

Emma Hughes Governor since 2023, co-opted Committees: TBC Main roles and expertise: TBC Motivation: Having been employed by the Fryern federation for the last two years, I have become committed to making Fryern the best school it can be. I care deeply for both the students and staff, their welfare is always at the forefront of my mind both in teaching and support around the school. By being on the governing body, I would be able to commit to this role further by giving the children and staff a voice and representative within the governors. I am also keen to learn more about the inner workings of the school and how I can help support our vision and ethos being strategically implemented.
